Unitary Britain is visibly part of an ever integrating Europe, yet is also devolving powers across the national borders to the Scottish parliament, the Welsh assembly and the northern Ireland Assembly. The establishment and accomplishment of these representative structures have also brought into question the idea that more powers should be conferred. Ultimately this has brought into question the role of England. Should Westminster then be an English parliament, and how significant are the regional calls for some kind of authority in light of granting London a legislative assembly and directly elected mayor. The role of the second chamber has also been brought into question. There has been the dilution of the hereditary aspect of the House of Lords, but following the Wakeham Commission's report, there has been little talk of what will replace them. How ...
